Job Description


We have instituted the Technology Efficiency program as one of key strategic programs for the Business Technology Office under the CTO. The program measures impact, cost, and operational efficiencies of our physical technology infrastructure, thousands of applications used to run PayPal, and the processes that govern IT. The team managing this program performs detailed analytics using data from multiple data sources / monitoring tools to identify inefficiencies and work within the organization to communicate / remediate them.

The efficiency program is a key priority for 2021 and the team is rapidly growing its area of responsibilities . We are seeking motivated applicants for a Database Administrator position to manage the data-mart used to perform the efficiency analytics and help the team scale to become an enterprise-wide product.

Core Duties

  • Manage the day-to-day operation of the efficiency database to ensure availability and performance
  • Perform weekly data load activities including monitoring automated jobs, troubleshooting errors, and coordinating with team members for any manual data gathering
  • Performs root cause analysis for any db query or data load issues. Resolves problems and recommends solutions
  • Ensure proper data archives and backups are taken on a regular basis and are accessible should they be needed
  • Evaluate large and complex queries / stored procedures and recommend changes to optimize performance
  • Ensure DB server is patched and manage upgrades of database every 1-2 years as dictated by enterprise policy
  • Assist other team members with query development as needed
  • Maintain data dictionary and technical documentation for DB schema

Prerequisite Knowledge & Proficiencies

Must Have

  • Proficient in Microsoft SQL Server 2016 & 2019 Database Development (T-SQL), Data Analysis and Support.
  • Thorough understanding of RDBMS concepts and ability to write complex SQL queries, Stored procedures, Functions & triggers
  • Proficiency with python scripting language
  • Familiarity with MS Word, Excel & Visio knowledge needed
  • Experience writing and maintaining technical documentation

Nice to Have

  • Knowledge of data backup, recovery, security, integrity
  • Experience managing database upgrades / data migrations
  • Design and implementation of ETLs from various source systems
  • Experience optimizing queries

Experience & Education

  • 2+ years of working experience as a Database Administrator
  • BS in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent

Examples of Specific Job Tasks/Accountabilities

  • Monitor jobs used to load analytics data weekly into the DB and manually load data sets not yet automated
  • Track errors with data loads or ETLs and remediate them. Ensure data is refreshed within 1-2 days each week so that the dashboard with updated data can be reviewed with the team
  • Create, update, maintain documentation on DB schema and data dictionary for fields
  • Build / optimize queries needed by team as needed
  • Track data quality / integrity issues with the db and report them
