 Lead Automation Machine Designer

Job Description

  1. Mechanical Design & Engineering
  • Expert-level proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks or equivalent) for detailed part, assembly, and layout drawings.
  • Strong understanding of motion mechanics including cams, linkages, indexing systems, and timing synchronization.
  • Experience designing for high-speed, high-repeatability operations (cycle times 35s).
  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
  • Application of tolerance analysis, fits, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Strong grasp of materials and finishes suitable for automation components: aluminum profiles, tool steel, hardened alloys, POM, UHMWPE, and anodized components.

2. Servo & Motion Control Integration

  • Proven experience with servo-controlled actuators, motors, and precision motion components (e.g., ball screws, linear guides, planetary gearboxes).
  • Selection and sizing of servo motors, stepper systems, drives, and their mechanical interfaces.
  • Understanding of PID tuning basics and integration into machine design for consistent positioning.

3. Robotics & EOAT Systems

  • Custom design of End-of-Arm Tooling (EOAT) for 6-axis and SCARA robots (ABB, FANUC, KUKA, Yaskawa, etc.).
  • Incorporation of vacuum grippers, pneumatic grippers, servo grippers, and multi-function EOAT assemblies.
  • Design for part orientation, alignment, clamping, and in-motion handling during robotic pick-and-place.
  • Collaboration with robot programmers to ensure EOAT path compatibility and minimized collision zones.

4. Assembly Machine Architecture

  • Development of rotary indexing tables (e.g., Weiss, Camco), linear tracks (e.g., Beckhoff XTS, IAI), and mechanical cams for synchronized operations.
  • Design of pick-and-place systems with X-Y or gantry motion, pneumatic or servo-driven.
  • Knowledge of vibratory bowl feeders, step feeders, and escapement mechanisms for part feeding.
  • Experience integrating mechanical torqueing, ultrasonic welding, press-fitting, leak testing, and screwdriving into automated cells.

5. Conveyor and Handling Systems

  • Design of custom servo-indexed conveyors integrated with injection moulding machines.
  • Conveyor layouts for inline cooling, accumulation, rejection, or stacking operations.
  • End-of-line stacking, unscrambling, and vision-guided part orientation systems.

6. Electrical and Control System Familiarity

  • Basic electrical panel layout understanding (cable routing, E-stop placement, HMI positions).
  • Awareness of PLC programming environments (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Beckhoff) for designing mechanical systems that match logic sequences.
  • Sensor selection and placement: photoelectric, proximity, vision sensors, fiber optic detection, etc.
  • Interfacing with vision systems (Keyence, Cognex) for presence, position, orientation, or label verification.

7. Prototyping, Testing & Commissioning

  • Lead mechanical debug and dry-run verification of new machines before handover.
  • Conduct mechanical FATs (Factory Acceptance Tests) and SATs (Site Acceptance Tests).
  • Ability to perform tolerance adjustments and design revisions during live testing.
  • Work closely with fabrication shops for part inspection, QA, and problem-solving.

8. Documentation & BOM Management

  • Generation of accurate 2D manufacturing drawings with part lists and tolerances.
  • Creation of exploded views, assembly instructions, and maintenance manuals.
  • Experience with PLM or PDM systems for BOM control and revision tracking.

Preferred candidate profile

1. Experience and Qualification:

  • 1015 years in automation machine design, with at least 5 years focused on high-speed assembly equipment
  • Self taught or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Automation Technology.
  • Proven track record of delivering custom machines for packaging, injection moulding, or consumer goods
  • Experience with CE marking, machine safety compliance (ISO 13849, 12100) is an asset

2. Standards & Compliance

  • Knowledge of CE marking, ISO 12100, ISO 13849 (machine safety), and OSHA/ANSI where applicable.
  • Ability to design around safety interlocks, light curtains, guards, and risk-reduction components.

3. Soft Skills & Project Involvement:

  • Strong communication with cross-functional teams (electrical, controls, molding, production).
  • Proven leadership in design reviews, problem-solving workshops, and root cause analysis.
  • Ability to manage multiple design projects simultaneously under tight timelines
  • Capable of mentoring junior designers and standardizing design best practices.
