Job Description
A surgical coder assigns medical codes for general surgery procedures for medical records and billing purposes. Usually, employers refer to a professional in this coding specialty as a Certified General Surgery Coder.- Review surgical / SDS records and assign accurate ICD-10-CM and CPT codes for diagnoses and procedures.
- Assign and sequence codes accurately based on medical record documentation.
- Follows all HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) rules and regulations.
- Review audit findings and share rebuttals.
- Thorough understanding and application of medical necessity and denials for chart processing.
- Involves in ensuring data integrity, including appropriate sequencing and dispositions, resolving all Coding edits before finalizing the charts, and being compliant with United States Local and Federal Regulations.
- Continuing education for ICD10 with Elsevier modules, staying current with coding clinics and revised codes.
- Actively keeps current with all coding updates and changes, utilizing resources such as Coding Clinics and relevant literature.
- Querying physicians regarding incomplete documentation.
- Should be a certified coder
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
