Department: Design & Build - Datacenter Projects
Role Overview
The HVAC SME will be responsible for the end-to-end lifecycle of HVAC systems in Datacenter projects, covering design, execution, commissioning, and transition into operations. The role requires strong technical expertise in HVAC system design, hands-on project execution experience at site, and a long-term view of operational efficiency and reliability in mission-critical environments.
Key Responsibilities
1. Design Phase:
- Lead HVAC system design for new datacenter builds and expansions (precision cooling, CRAH/CRAC, chilled water systems, DX systems, economizers, etc.).
- Review and validate consultant/vendor designs, drawings, and technical submissions for compliance with datacenter standards and energy efficiency requirements.
- Prepare design basis reports (DBR), equipment specifications, BOQ, and RFP documents.
- Ensure designs comply with ASHRAE, ISHRAE, NFPA, and international best practices.
2. Project Execution & Commissioning:
- Oversee HVAC system installation, site execution, and contractor/vendor coordination during construction.
- Conduct inspections for quality, safety, and adherence to project timelines.
- Support integrated testing & commissioning (IT&C) of HVAC and environmental systems.
- Resolve site-level issues with a problem-solving approach while maintaining compliance with design intent.
3. Transition to Operations:
- Establish HVAC operational protocols and SOPs post-handover.
- Train operations teams on system performance, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Ensure energy-efficient operation of HVAC systems while meeting uptime and SLA requirements.
- Provide post-occupancy evaluations and continuous improvement inputs for future projects.
Key Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of precision cooling technologies used in datacenters.
- Hands-on experience with chillers, cooling towers, AHUs, PACs/CRACs/CRAHs, in-row cooling, containment systems, and BMS integration.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, load calculations, and CFD analysis reports.
- Familiarity with green building practices, energy optimization techniques, and sustainability frameworks (LEED, IGBC preferred).
- Strong stakeholder management (consultants, OEMs, contractors, and internal project/ops teams).
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering (Masters preferred).
- 10-15 years of experience in HVAC systems, with at least 5-7 years in datacenter design & execution.
- Proven experience in handling end-to-end HVAC lifecycle (design execution operations).
- Certification in ASHRAE/ISHRAE membership or equivalent will be an added advantage.
