Job Description
Position Title: Inpatient Medical Coder
Department: Health Information Management (HIM)
Employment Type: Full-Time
Reports to: Coding Director
Position Overview:
The inpatient coder is responsible for reviewing and accurately coding inpatient records using ICD-10-CM and PCS coding systems. This role ensures compliant, timely, and accurate billing for technical and professional services. A strong understanding of Medicare guidelines and appropriate modifier usage is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes to inpatient records for surgical, medical, and complex admissions.
- Review provider documentation to ensure medical necessity and accurate DRG assignment.
- Accurately apply Medicare billing rules, modifier 25, modifier 56, and DRG grouping logic
- Code both technical (UB-04), and professional (CMS-1500) components where applicable
- Ensure the interpreting provider is a physician when APP billing applies.
- Identify and correctly code remote monitoring and implantable cardiac device services.
- Collaborate with clinical teams for documentation clarification when needed.
- Maintain productivity and accuracy standards in line with organizational benchmarks.
- Follow HIPAA regulations and internal privacy guidelines.
Qualifications:
- Certification: CPC, CCS, RHIT, or RHIA required
- At least 3 years of inpatient coding experience
- Proficiency in Medicare billing, modifier use, and MS-DRG assignment
- Experience with remote monitoring coding and inpatient professional claims
- Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to accuracy and compliance
