Job Summary
We are seeking a Senior Mainframe IMS & Db2 Database Administrator to lead the engineering, maintenance, and optimization of our core banking/insurance systems. You will be responsible for the health of high-volume Db2 for z/OS and IMS DB/DC environments, ensuring sub-second response times for millions of daily transactions while leading modernization efforts like Zowe adoption and Db2 AI integration.
Key Responsibilities
Db2 for z/OS Administration
- System Tuning: Perform deep-level subsystem tuning, buffer pool optimization, and ZPARM management for Db2 13 (or 14).
- Query Performance: Use IBM Data Studio or Query Tuner to analyze complex SQL and implement advanced indexing, MQTs, and partitioning.
- Utility Management: Execute and automate high-speed utilities (LOAD, REORG, RUNSTATS, UNLOAD) using IBM or BMC toolsets.
- Modernization: Implement Db2 AI for z/OS (Db2ZAI) for autonomous performance tuning and leverage Restful APIs for Db2 data access.
IMS DB/DC Administration
- Database Design: Manage IMS Full Function and Fast Path (DEDB) databases. Lead the conversion of DBDs and PSBs to modern formats where applicable.
- Transaction Management: Monitor and tune IMS DC (Data Communications) regions, message queues, and transaction definitions.
- HALDB Management: Design and maintain High Availability Large Databases (HALDB), including partition management and online reorganization.
- Data Sharing: Configure and troubleshoot IMS and Db2 Sysplex Data Sharing to ensure continuous availability.
Operations & Security
- Disaster Recovery: Lead Backup & Recovery strategies using GDPS, FlashCopy, and standard recovery utilities to meet zero-data-loss RPOs.
- Security & Compliance: Enforce RACF/ACF2 security protocols and implement database encryption (per Pervasive Encryption standards).
- Automation: Develop and maintain JCL, REXX, and Python scripts for automated health checks and space management.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: 10+ years as a Mainframe DBA, with at least 5 years managing dual IMS and Db2 environments.
- Technical Skills:
- Expertise in z/OS environment, TSO/ISPF, JCL, and SMP/E.
- Deep understanding of Coupling Facility and Parallel Sysplex architecture.
- Proficiency with third-party tools (e.g., CA/Broadcom, BMC, or IBM Db2 Tools).
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
Preferred Skills (2026 Context)
- DevOps for z/OS: Experience with Zowe, Ansible for IBM Z, or IBM DB2 DevOps Experience.
- Hybrid Cloud: Familiarity with IBM Cloud Pak for Data or replicating mainframe data to cloud targets (AWS/Azure) using IDR (InfoSphere Data Replication).
- Application Knowledge: Familiarity with COBOL, PL/I, or Java on z/OS.
Soft Skills
Incident Leadership: Ability to lead "War Room " calls for high-severity production outages.
