 Research Associate

Job Description

  • Develop and implement numerical models for superconducting cables and DC powertrain networks.
  • Conduct simulations and analyze results to optimize system performance and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and develop new products and systems.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including reports and presentations.
  • Participate in project meetings and contribute to the development of project plans and timelines.
  • Work closely with senior researchers and engineers to ensure successful project execution.
Job Requirements
  • Strong knowledge of electrical engineering principles and practices.
  • Experience with numerical tools such as MATLAB/Simulink and FEM-based software.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations.
  • A PhD is required, along with a track record of emerging independence within a research/professional environment, or professional qualifications and experience equivalent to PhD level plus requisite experience in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current issues and future directions within relevant research disciplines.
  • Well-developed working knowledge of research methods, technical models, equipment, and techniques.
  • Proficiency in numerical tools like MATLAB Simulink and m-file, Python, FEM-based software including COMSOL, ANSYS, or equivalent.
  • Effective organization skills to manage time, prioritize, and deliver appropriate research, teaching, and administrative responsibilities.
  • Absolute punctuality and excellent time management to meet delivery deadlines due to the critical nature of the project.
  • Self-motivation, initiative, and independent thought/working.
  • Problem-solving skills including a flexible and pragmatic approach.
  • Research creativity and cross-discipline collaborative ability.
  • Skills in experimental testing of superconductors or cryogenic systems.
  • Sufficient relevant research experience (or equivalent) appropriate to an early career researcher.
  • Project or subject-specific experience in superconducting cable or superconductor numerical modelling.
  • Experience of conducting systematic reviews in relevant areas.
  • Experience of scientific writing of reports, conference proceedings, and journal papers.
  • Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Developing track record of research outputs compatible with enhancing the School's research profile in accordance with School objectives.
  • Sufficient depth of relevant research experience, normally including sufficient experience in a related field, appropriate to an early career researcher.
  • Experience of making a leading contribution in academic activities.
  • Ability to demonstrate a degree of independence as illustrated by identification of project objectives from assessment of the literature, design & analysis of experiments & drafting of papers.
  • Proven commitment to supporting the career development of colleagues and to other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage, including some experience of research project supervision.
  • Commitment to open research, as appropriate to the discipline, through open data, open code, open educational resources and practices that support replication.
  • Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines or organizational policy, applying initiative and independent judgement.
  • An emerging national or international reputation.
  • Experience of making distinct contributions to identifying and pursuing research funding (or equivalent business development) applications.
