CLINICAL ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Patient Evaluation & Clinical Decision-Making
- Conduct comprehensive history taking and physical examination
- Formulate differential diagnoses and management plans
- Order and interpret:
- Laboratory investigations
- Radiological imaging (CT, MRI, USG)
- Identify high-risk patients and escalate to the Consultant
2. Outpatient (OPD) & Inpatient (IPD) Care
OPD
- Assist to evaluate new and follow-up patients
- Assist to provide treatment plans and surgical advice
- Assist to counsel patients regarding procedures and outcomes
IPD
- Complete daily ward rounds with the Consultant
- Monitor admitted patients and modify treatment as per the advise
- Ensure continuity of care and timely interventions
3. Pre-Operative Management
- Assess surgical fitness and coordinate pre-anaesthesia evaluation
- Ensure:
- Required investigations are complete
- Blood products arranged if needed
- Obtain informed consent (procedure-specific and high-risk)
- Verify:
- Patient identity (2 identifiers)
- Surgical site marking
- Pre-op checklist compliance (Hospital/NABH protocols)
4. Intra-Operative Responsibilities
- Assist or perform surgeries based on competency:
- General surgical procedures (hernia, appendectomy, etc.)
- GI and hepatobiliary procedures (under supervision)
- Maintain:
- Sterile techniques
- Surgical safety checklist compliance
- Handle intraoperative complications and communicate with the Consultant
5. Post-Operative Care
- Manage immediate and long-term post-op care:
- Monitor vitals, drains, wound status
- Detect complications early (infection, bleeding, leaks)
- Plan:
- Antibiotics
- Nutrition (enteral/parenteral)
- Prepare discharge summaries with follow-up instructions
6. Emergency & Critical Care
- Attend surgical emergencies:
- Acute abdomen
- Trauma
- GI bleeding
- Stabilize patients and initiate treatment
- Assist in ICU management:
- Ventilated patients (basic management)
- Sepsis protocols
7. Gastroenterology-Related Clinical Work
- Assist/perform procedures (as trained):
- Manage:
- GI malignancies
- Hepatobiliary disorders
- Coordinate with oncology and gastroenterology teams
8. Procedures & Bedside Interventions
- Perform:
- Suturing, wound care
- Abscess drainage
- Central/arterial line insertion (if trained)
- Assist in advanced procedures
9. Documentation & Medico-Legal Compliance
- Maintain accurate and timely:
- Case sheets
- Operative notes
- Consent forms
- Discharge summaries
- Ensure compliance with medico-legal requirements
- Document complications and critical events properly
10. Infection Control & Patient Safety
- Follow strict infection control practices:
- Hand hygiene
- Antibiotic stewardship
- Monitor and help reduce:
- Surgical Site Infections (SSI)
- Ensure adherence to NABH patient safety goals
ADMINISTRATIVE ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. NABH Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Adhere to hospital policies and SOPs aligned with
National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers standards - Participate in:
- Clinical audits
- Mortality & morbidity meetings
- Ensure compliance with:
- Documentation standards
- Safety protocols
2. Departmental Coordination
- Coordinate with:
- Support, Paramedic, Operations and Nursing Staff
- OT Team
- Anaesthetists
- ICU and Emergency Team
- Ensure smooth patient flow between OPD, IPD, OT, and ICU
3. Operation Theatre (OT) Management
- Assist in:
- OT scheduling and case prioritization
- Ensure:
- Availability of instruments and consumables
- Checklist compliance (WHO Surgical Safety Checklist)
- Monitor OT efficiency and turnaround time
4. Resource & Bed Management
- Assist in:
- Bed allocation and discharge planning
- Optimize:
- Length of hospital stay
- Resource utilization
5. Patient Communication & Satisfaction
- Provide clear communication regarding:
- Diagnosis
- Treatment options
- Surgical risks and outcomes
- Address patient and family concerns
- Ensure high patient satisfaction and ethical transparency
6. Incident Reporting & Risk Management
- Report:
- Adverse events
- Near-misses
- Participate in root cause analysis (RCA)
- Implement corrective and preventive actions
7. Academic & Training Responsibilities
- Participate in:
- CMEs, journal clubs, case discussions
- Teach and supervise:
- Junior doctors, interns, residents
- Stay updated with latest surgical practices
8. Data Management & Audits
- Maintain:
- Surgical logs
- Patient databases
- Contribute to:
- Quality indicators (infection rates, outcomes)
- Support NABH audits and inspections
9. Ethical & Legal Responsibilities
- Ensure:
- Patient confidentiality
- Ethical clinical practices
- Follow legal protocols in medico-legal cases
Desired Candidate Profile
- Should possess MBBS + MS - General Surgery / DNB degree recognized by Medical Council of India.
- Should possess minimum 1 year relevant experience in General Surgery.
- Candidate should remain flexible to work in rotational shifts.
- Candidates / Aspirants ready to work at /relocate to Mysore on their own can also apply.
