JOB SUMMARY:
The Data Architect will lead the design and implementation of enterprise data architectures that support underwriting, claims, billing, risk modeling, actuarial analysis, and regulatory reporting. This role ensures that data across the insurance value chainpolicy, claims, policyholders, agents/producers, and financialremains accurate, secure, accessible, and analytics-ready. The Data Architect will work closely with business leaders and IT stakeholders to modernize the data ecosystem across Azure and AWS cloud environments, advancing the organizations data strategy.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Enterprise Data Architecture & Design
- Architect scalable data solutions across Azure and AWS to support core insurance operations and advanced analytics.
- Design conceptual, logical, and physical data models covering policy, claims, billing, financial, and third-party data sources.
- Establish and maintain data standards, metadata management practices, and governance frameworks aligned with industry requirements (e.g., NAIC, DOI reporting).
- Evaluate and recommend cloud-native storage and compute services (e.g., AWS S3, Redshift, Glue; Azure Data Lake Storage, Snowflake).
Data Strategy, Governance & Compliance
- Partner with underwriting, claims, actuarial, finance, and regulatory teams to define reliable data structures and reporting frameworks.
- Implement data governance programs ensuring security, lineage, quality, and compliance with insurance-specific regulations (e.g., DOI, GDPR, PCI, SOC).
- Define policies for handling sensitive insurance data such as PII, financial data, and protected underwriting data.
Cloud Data Engineering & Integration
- Design robust data pipelines using cloud-native services (e.g., AWS Glue, Azure Data Factory, Snowflake, dbt).
- Integrate data across core insurance systems (policy administration, claims management, CRM, ERP, actuarial models, third-party data providers).
- Guide data engineering teams in ETL/ELT best practices and performance optimization for multi-cloud environments.
Analytics, Performance & Optimization
- Support actuarial, underwriting, and analytics teams by designing data structures that enable predictive modeling, risk scoring, and BI dashboards.
- Optimize cloud-based architecture for speed, cost efficiency, resilience, and scalability.
- Continuously assess system performance and implement improvements to support high-volume insurance data processing.
Collaboration & Leadership
- Serve as the enterprise subject matter expert on insurance data architecture across Azure and AWS.
- Work cross-functionally with business units to translate insurance workflows and regulatory needs into scalable technical solutions.
- Mentor data engineers, analysts, and technical teams on modern cloud architecture and data management frameworks.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelors degree in computer science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, or related field; advanced degree preferred. 7+ years of experience in data architecture, data engineering, or database design. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong experience with Azure (ADLS, Synapse, ADF, Snowflake) and AWS (S3, Redshift, Glue) platforms.
- Proficiency with data modeling tools and methodologies for insurance datasets.
- Expertise in SQL, NoSQL databases, data lakes, and modern ELT architectures.
- Deep understanding of data governance, security, privacy, and compliance in the insurance sector.
- Familiarity with insurance operations data: underwriting, claims, actuarial, financial reporting, vendor data, and regulatory requirements.
- Experience with insurance core systems (Guidewire, ISO/Verisk data products, etc.).
- Knowledge of big data technologies and event-driven architecture.
- Experience working with actuarial teams and exposure to actuarial modeling tools.
- Cloud certifications (AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Data Engineer, etc.).
- Ability to translate complex insurance business processes into scalable data architectures.
- Strong analytical and conceptual problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
