OT Nurse (Operation Theatre Nurse) Job Description

Job Title: OT Nurse / Surgical Nurse
Department: Operation Theatre
Reports To: OT In-Charge / Surgeon / Nursing Superintendent

Role Overview

An OT Nurse assists in surgical procedures, ensures the operation theatre is sterile and well-prepared, and supports surgeons and anesthesiologists before, during, and after surgeries.

Key Responsibilities

Pre-Operative Duties

• Prepare OT rooms with required surgical instruments and equipment
• Ensure strict sterilization and infection control protocols
• Verify patient identity, consent forms, and pre-op checklist
• Assist in positioning and prepping the patient

Intra-Operative Duties

• Assist surgeons during operations (scrub nurse / circulating nurse role)
• Pass instruments and supplies accurately
• Monitor sterile field and maintain aseptic techniques
• Keep count of instruments, sponges, and needles

Post-Operative Duties

• Assist in shifting patient to recovery room
• Monitor patient condition immediately after surgery
• Ensure proper disposal and sterilization of used instruments
• Document procedure details and nursing care

Skills & Competencies

• Strong knowledge of surgical procedures and instruments
• Aseptic and infection control practices
• Attention to detail and quick decision-making
• Ability to work under pressure
• Good communication and teamwork skills

Qualifications

• B.Sc Nursing / GNM (General Nursing & Midwifery)
• Valid nursing registration (e.g., State Nursing Council in India)
• OT specialization or experience preferred

Experience

• Freshers can apply (training provided in some hospitals)
• 13 years of OT experience preferred for senior roles

Work Environment

• Hospitals, surgical centers, emergency units
• Rotational shifts, including nights and on-call duties
