Job Summary

The Assistant Manager Medical Coding is responsible for overseeing daily coding operations, ensuring coding accuracy and compliance with healthcare regulations, managing team performance, and supporting process improvement initiatives. The role involves mentoring coding staff, maintaining quality standards, and driving productivity to meet organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise a team of medical coders.
  • Ensure accurate assignment of ICD, CPT, and HCPCS codes based on medical documentation.
  • Monitor coding quality, productivity, and turnaround time metrics.
  • Conduct regular audits and provide feedback to improve coding accuracy.
  • Ensure compliance with payer guidelines, coding regulations, and organizational policies.
  • Analyze coding denials and implement corrective action plans.
  • Coordinate with physicians, clinical staff, and RCM teams to resolve coding queries.
  • Prepare and present operational reports, dashboards, and performance metrics.
  • Support training, onboarding, and development of coding staff.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities to enhance efficiency and quality.
  • Manage staffing, workload allocation, and resource planning.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Healthcare Management, Pharmacy, Nursing, or a related field.
  • Certified coding credential preferred (CPC, CCS, COC, CIC, or equivalent).
  • 58 years of medical coding experience with at least 12 years in a team lead or supervisory role.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Understanding of healthcare reimbursement and payer guidelines.
  • Experience in specialty coding (e.g., HCC, E&M, Surgery, Radiology, ED, Inpatient, Outpatient).
  • Quality auditing and compliance management.
  • Team leadership and people management skills.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and healthcare coding software.
