- Edit manuscripts for grammar, punctuation, spelling, clarity, and stylistic consistency.
- Ensure conformity with house style or publisher-specific guidelines (e.g., APA, MLA,Chicago, AMA, OXCOLA
- Apply different editorial styles and tone suitable for humanities or STM texts.)
- Flag ambiguous content or inconsistencies for author or editor clarification.
- Use editing tools and markup systems (e.g., Track Changes in MS Word, Adobe Acrobat annotations).
- Collaborate with project managers, typesetters, and quality control teams to meet deadlines and maintain workflow efficiency.
Roles and responsibilities:
Language Editing
- Correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and syntax errors.
- Improve sentence structure and word choice for clarity and flow.
- Ensure tone, style, and voice are appropriate for the target audience.
Style and Consistency
- Apply house style or publisher guidelines (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago, AMA).
- Standardize capitalization, hyphenation, abbreviations, and headings.
- Ensure consistent formatting across the manuscript (including spacing, fonts, and layout elements).
Structural and Logical Clarity
- Flag awkward transitions, logical inconsistencies, or redundancies.
- Suggest improvements in paragraphing and overall flow when necessary.
- Verify consistent use of terms, symbols, and concepts.
Coordination and Communication
- Raise queries for unclear or ambiguous content.
- Collaborate with authors, editors, and production teams to clarify and finalize edits.
- Track and document changes as per workflow protocols.
