Job Description
Backend Engineer II
Role Overview
A Backend Engineer II is responsible for building and maintaining backend services with moderate complexity. At this level, engineers are expected to work independently on features, contribute to system design, and ensure reliable production systems.
Key Responsibilities
1. Backend Development
- Design and implement backend services, APIs, and business logic
- Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code
- Handle end-to-end feature development with minimal supervision
2. System Design (Intermediate)
- Contribute to design discussions for new features
- Understand and work within existing system architecture
- Make decisions around data models, APIs, and service structure
3. Debugging & Maintenance
- Troubleshoot production issues and bugs
- Improve system stability and performance
- Participate in on-call rotations (if applicable)
4. Collaboration
- Work with frontend engineers, product managers, and QA
- Translate requirements into scalable backend solutions
5. Code Quality
- Write unit and integration tests
- Participate in code reviews (both giving and receiving feedback)
- Follow engineering best practices
Required Skills
Core Technical Skills
- Proficiency in one backend language (Java, Python, Node.js, Go, etc.)
- Solid understanding of data structures and algorithms
- Experience building RESTful APIs
Databases & Systems
- Working knowledge of SQL/NoSQL databases
- Basic understanding of system design concepts
- Familiarity with caching (Redis), queues, or messaging systems
Tools & Practices
- Experience with Git and version control
- Familiarity with Agile/Scrum workflows
- Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure is a plus)
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related field
- 1-3 years of backend development experience
