Job Description

A Radiology Technician is responsible for operating medical imaging equipment to produce diagnostic images such as X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, and ultrasound images. The role involves patient care, image quality assurance, radiation safety, and coordination with radiologists and doctors.

Key Responsibilities Patient Care
  • Prepare patients for imaging procedures by explaining the process clearly

  • Verify patient identity and medical history

  • Position patients correctly to obtain accurate diagnostic images

  • Ensure patient comfort and safety during procedures

Imaging Procedures
  • Operate imaging equipment such as:

    • X-ray machines

    • CT scanners

    • MRI scanners

    • Fluoroscopy units

    • Ultrasound machines (if trained)

  • Adjust equipment settings according to the procedure and patient condition

  • Assist radiologists during specialized procedures

Radiation Safety
  • Follow radiation protection protocols (ALARA principle)

  • Use protective equipment such as lead aprons and shields

  • Monitor radiation exposure for patients and staff

  • Ensure compliance with AERB (Atomic Energy Regulatory Board) guidelines in India

Equipment & Image Quality
  • Perform routine equipment checks and basic maintenance

  • Ensure high-quality images for accurate diagnosis

  • Report equipment malfunction to biomedical engineers

Documentation & Reporting
  • Maintain patient imaging records and reports

  • Upload images to PACS/RIS systems

  • Ensure confidentiality of patient data

1. Patient Preparation & Care

  • Verify patient identity and imaging requisition
  • Explain imaging procedures to patients in a clear and reassuring manner
  • Prepare patients physically and psychologically for procedures
  • Position patients correctly to obtain accurate diagnostic images
  • Assist elderly, pediatric, and trauma patients during imaging
  • Ensure patient comfort, dignity, and privacy at all times

2. Performing Imaging Procedures

  • Operate diagnostic imaging equipment such as:
    • X-ray
    • CT scan
    • MRI
    • Fluoroscopy
    • Mammography
    • Ultrasound (if trained)
  • Select appropriate exposure factors based on patient condition
  • Assist radiologists during contrast and interventional procedures
  • Ensure high-quality diagnostic images for accurate reporting

3. Radiation Safety & Protection

  • Follow AERB (Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, India) radiation safety guidelines
  • Apply ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles
  • Use protective devices such as lead aprons, thyroid shields, and gonad shields
  • Monitor radiation doses using TLD badges
  • Maintain radiation safety records and logs

4. Equipment Handling & Maintenance

  • Perform routine checks of imaging equipment before use
  • Ensure proper functioning of machines and accessories
  • Identify and report equipment faults to biomedical engineers
  • Maintain cleanliness and infection control in imaging areas

5. Image Processing & Quality Control

  • Process images using CR/DR systems and imaging software
  • Ensure correct labeling and image orientation
  • Review images for clarity, positioning, and diagnostic quality
  • Minimize repeats and unnecessary radiation exposure

6. Documentation & Record Keeping

  • Maintain accurate patient records and imaging data
  • Upload and archive images using PACS/RIS systems
  • Ensure confidentiality and ethical handling of patient data
  • Maintain registers as per hospital and regulatory requirements

7. Assisting Radiologists & Medical Team

  • Assist radiologists during specialized and interventional procedures
  • Prepare contrast media and emergency drugs (as instructed)
  • Coordinate with doctors, nurses, and support staff
  • Respond promptly during emergency imaging cases

8. Infection Control & Safety

  • Follow hospital infection control protocols
  • Use PPE as required
  • Clean and disinfect equipment after each patient
  • Ensure safe disposal of biomedical waste

9. Emergency & Shift Duties

  • Handle emergency imaging procedures in trauma and ICU settings
  • Work in rotational shifts including night duties
  • Stay calm and efficient during high-pressure situations

10. Professional Ethics & Continuous Learning

  • Follow professional ethics and patient confidentiality
  • Stay updated with advances in radiology technology
  • Participate in training, workshops, and quality improvement programs
